The Hawks of Whitefish Point
Jerry Liguori is one of the most renowned hawk
ID experts in North America. Jerry spent a spring season in the
year 2000 as staff hawk counter at WPBO. He has written a very
informative guide to identifying the raptors that migrate over
Whitefish Point. It is a handy field guide with line drawings that
depict key field marks, the silhouettes represent distinct shapes,
and the text includes diagnostic flight-style traits. Jerry shows
readers how combining all these characteristics proves helpful in
making accurate field identifications. Identifying hawks can be
fun, rewarding and challenging.
At $4.00 US, including shipping and
handling, this book is a steal!

Derek Lovitch was WPBO’s staff field biologist

particular species, this book is for you. This guide not only
explains the best times to visit the Point for different birds,
but also other areas around Whitefish to visit for some unique
rare species.

WPBO Cookbook
Several years ago, our Gift Shop
Supervisor, Joann Selbee approached me about her grand idea for a
fundraiser. “Why not publish a cookbook?” she said. Joann and I
had known each other for many years and shared a love for
collecting cookbooks from places we traveled, and/or in support of
various fund-raising activities. I was intrigued. After all, isn’t
half the fun of cooking the sharing of recipes and ideas with
other cooks? And so the seed was sown.
We published an appeal in The Migrant and received
responses from several of our loyal members. What I particularly
loved about the responses was that many came with short stories
about the recipes being shared. It was a great privilege to be
able to share a little piece of many lives.
Once I started receiving the recipes, reality set in! I
had to categorize, review, set up, and make decisions on every
aspect I never considered in order to build a cookbook. What type
of dividers? What style of cover? Did we want little designs on
the page? How many recipes did we want to use? What did we want
versus what we could afford? After all, this was a fund-raiser!
And, oh by the way, when would I have the time to type all of
those recipes in the style the publisher needed? In stepped Linda
Myers, who, with her husband Dick, has been a tireless supporter
of Whitefish Point Bird Observatory. Linda typed all of the
recipes and was instrumental in this cookbook going to press.
For those of you who contributed to this cookbook,
thanks for being patient! We appreciate that you are sharing your
recipes with our members and friends. For those of you purchasing
this cookbook, thank you for your support of Whitefish Point Bird
Observatory. If you have ever visited Whitefish Point, you can see
why physically it inspires such a fierce need to protect the land.
If you read the article about Whitefish Point and the Whitefish
Point Bird Observatory, you understand the importance of the
research conducted at the Observatory.
Last but not least, enjoy the recipes! I have
personally contributed some of my favorites and tried some of
those submitted for the cookbook. I didn’t have to wait for years
for them to be published! They have been wonderful!
Thank you, Sue Fortuna
The price for this booklet is $11.00, which includes
shipping and handling.
