EDUCATION

The Observatory offers a variety of activities and programs about birds and the ecology of the Whitefish Point area. Our educational goal is to promote awareness and appreciation of the environment and, in particular, the relationship of birds to the environment. Opportunities include bird walks, in-the-hand bird programs, tours, and workshops, as well as classes for individuals, schools, and groups. WPBO is actively expanding its educational outreach to schools, natural history clubs, and visitors to Whitefish Point. Please contact WPBO if you are interested in a program for your organization.

The following programs are offered by WPBO during our research seasons and at other times as staffing levels permit.

  • Guided walks and banding demonstrations are offered for visitors during weekends and for groups by special arrangement at any time.

  • Evening Owl Flight - the ecology of owls is discussed while waiting for owls to begin their late evening flights from the woods below the hawk dune.

  • Nocturnal Raptors Close Up - when owls from the previous night's banding are available in the morning, they are displayed in-hand with a discussion of their ecology.

Please contact WPBO for further information on these and other programs. Also, you may wish to call ahead to confirm the availability of our educational programs.
