Events and Programs

WPBO offers a variety of activities and programs about birds and the ecology of the area. Our educational goal is to promote awareness and appreciation of the environment and, in particular, the relationship of birds to the environment. Opportunities include bird walks, various slideshow presentations, and short nature hikes. Programs are $3/non-members, and FREE for members. All programs meet at the Owl’s Roost gift shop and nature center. Be prepared for a variety of weather conditions. Please contact us at (906) 492-3596 for more information about these programs.

Spring Fling is WPBO’s annual celebration of bird migration. The event is held each year during the last weekend in April. Life listers, photographers, and novice birders alike will enjoy this weekend at Whitefish Point. Spring Fling includes bird walks, field trips, a banquet, and more!

Special events are an effort by the Whitefish Point Bird Observatory to expand its educational outreach to the local community, area schools, natural history clubs, and visitors to the Point. Throughout the year, you may find WPBO at a local festival or nearby tourist destination.

The Birding Michigan Field Trip Series offers birders of all skill levels the opportunity to spend time in the field with experienced leaders in some of Michigan’s best birding “hot spots,” while at the same time supporting the Whitefish Point Bird Observatory’s research and education programs. These trips focus on visiting great birding places in Upper Michigan during peak times, and provide a great way to improve your identification and bird finding skills. Leaders for all trips are experienced birders and knowledgeable about the birds of Michigan. All have led numerous trips for WPBO or other birding organizations. If you have questions about these trips, contact Tony Janisch (WPBO Director) by email at info@wpbo.org or by phone at 906-492-3596.
